In a way, Island School is like a big pot of stew; the longer it cooks and the more tasty ingredients that are added, the more delicious it becomes. As we head toward our 25th birthday, our "stew" is becoming more and more delicious. As always, new teachers and students bring a wealth of experiences, personalities, and talents to the Island School 'ohana.

New faculty this year have enthusiastically jumped into the school year with both feet. Brad Williamson has joined our staff teaching middle and high school social studies, Sharon Douglas teaches Algebra 1 and is filling in for Melissa Davis as our middle school language arts teacher,Matt Miller teaches language arts and social studies to 6th graders, Cindy Wortmann is our new 5th grade teacher, and Lynda Leisse teaches 3rd grade.
This week, we're highlighting Sharon Douglas. A native of South Africa, her studies have taken her to places including Findhorn in Scotland, the White Earth Native American Reservation, and Esalen in California. She has a Masters degree in Education and has been

More On Bus Transportation
For south side families, monthly passes for the Kaua'i Bus may be purchased at the County Building for $15. They are good for unlimited rides for one month, but cannot be carried over to another month. There is no savings in buying a monthy pass, but since the driver does not give change, passes might be more convenient.

Fall Round-Up
This is our annual back-to-school get-together, (not to be confused with a fundraising event). It is sponsored by the Parents Council. Students and their families are invited. Dinner tickets will be sold to cover the cost of the meal. So far, the scheduled activities include carriage rides, a slide and
2 bouncy castles from Garden Island Inflatables, Sumo Suits for the high school kids, and the infamous Dunk Tank. Additional activities are being organized by some of the Room Parents. Don't miss this family event!

To Kiahuna Golf Course Superintendent, Robert Medeiros and Island School parent, Mel Ota, for assisting in the maintenance of the new athletic fields. Mr. Medeiros is providing his professional expertise in golf course maintenance to help us with the care and upkeep of our new fields. Parent volunteer Mel Ota spent all Saturday morning and part of the afternoon preparing an area for the new chip and putting green. Mel is the first to sign up as a volunteer of the Aina Club to help with the landscape maintenance of the fields. More volunteers are needed. Call Mike, at 246-0233 ext. 252, to help!
To all the wonderful people who have helped Lynda Liesse get the 3rd grade room ready for the year: Shelby & Kalani Dabin for painting and organizing the room, building a shoe rack and shelves; Rodney Ochoa for building the wonderful loft; former I.S. student Nathaniel Evslin for his hours of help; Diane Higa & Marla Domingo for testing students and classroom assistance; Lynda's husband, Jim, for laying carpet and putting up an art line; Lisa Sullivan for organizing parent volunteers; and to everyone for all the cheerful greetings and words of encouragement.

To Doug and Justine Albrecht and Plantation Carriages for all the time they spend getting their horses and carriage ready for the Fall Round-Up.

To Wes Decker, our numero uno senior extraordinaire (who turned 78 last week), for his help in transporting a recently acquired "maintenance cart" from Kaua'i Lagoons Golf Course to Island School on his son's trailer.
