It's Annual Giving time

Island School's Annual Giving campaign officially begins next week. Our monetary goal is $60,000; our primary goal is 100% participation. This means that WHATEVER you can contribute helps us achieve success.
Last year's Annual Giving campaign was a huge success. Thanks to the tremendous participation of our 'ohana, $69,672 was raised!

As is true with most non-profit organizations, Island School has a need for outside funding to operate at the level of quality expected of top-notch preparatory schools. Tuition covers 76% of our costs; 24% must be found elsewhere.

Annual Giving funds the school's operating budget programs that benefit your children on a daily basis. Unlike special funding such as capital, tuition aid, and endowment, our operations budget covers the nuts and bolts kinds of expenses including teachers salaries, class supplies, and instructional materials. Every dollar raised helps Island
School provide the highest quality education.

Island School's Annual Report will come in the mail soon. This is our "financial yearbook," and lets our donors know how their dollars were spent. Giving envelopes will be enclosed. Your quick response will be greatly appreciated.

Ask your employer if they have a Matching Funds program. Many businesses on Kaua'i will match any donation you make to Annual Giving. This would double your donation!

Grandparents can be enthusiastic contributors to our Annual Giving campaign. We'd be delighted to add them to our mailing list. Please either phone in or email their addresses to joan@ischool.org, or 246-0233 ex. 232.

One hundred percent participation means YOU. All gifts are appreciated.

CROSS COUNTRY It was a great meet last weekend. Congratulations are in order to Mario Rosa for placing 81st in the state, the highest finish by any of the Kaua'i runners.

HEALTH This highschool class was very fortunate to have Mrs. Russell as their teacher last trimester. They talked about issues that today's teens are facing and brought in speakers to share information about drugs, alcohol and teen pregnancy. Eating disorders and teen suicide were also discussed. The class took a trip to KCCC, where they learned about the facility and the drug problem
here on Kaua'i. Sophomore Eimy Escano noted that she appreciated the class, "... because I am sure we all learn from others' mistakes." Noreen Dougherty, our pre-K teacher, taught the class "Brain Gym," which they found useful especially as they were studying for their final exams.
Seventh and eighth grade students have started the Project Alert drug prevention program with Jackie Mierta. Parents can expect a letter in the mail that explains the program. The first homework assignment involves the parents and students taking a test to check their Drug IQ.

... from an essay by Moana Mendoza, grade 9, comparing The Old Man and the Sea and Heart of Darkness:

In the end both the idols start decaying. The fish gets torn apart and eaten by the sharks; Kurtz slowly slips away into the darkness. Both end up dying. Great things don't last forever.
