Island School embraces the idea that students benefit from regular, strenuous physical activity.
While athletics remain just one part of Island School’s broad educational experience, we believe it’s a vital part. Experience suggests that students find reward from contributing to a joint effort with teammates. Lessons in teamwork also teaches them about commitment, sportsmanship, and competition, not to mention limits and stress. Friendships made on the athletic field carry over to the rest of campus life.
Island School has three varsity Fall sports that students may select from to participate in. The general time frame for competition is from August through the end of October.

Coach Kylie Silva heads the girl’s volleyball program, one of the longest standing programs at Island School. They practice and play in the state of the art Wilcox Gymnasium. In 2017, the Girls Junior Varsity and Varsity teams won the most games in Island School history. KIF All-Star, Ashley Mecham leads the way for the girls into a new and exciting season.
Varsity Boys and Girls Cross Country is one of Island Schools sports that is quite popular and successful. Head Coach, Eric Wortmann's experience and guidance have led to success for Cross Country for many years, sending dozens of runners and teams to run in the state championship meet and set the foundation for many to run in college. Island School has also won several Kauai Interscholastic Federation Cross Country Team Championships, for the boys (2002, 2003, 2014, 2017) and girls (2014). 2017’s KIF All-Stars Ella Beck (KIF Champion), Olivia Lutkevich, Nahe Edwards, Henry Scherer, Matthew Vickers and Joshua Graves lead the team into another promising year.
Veteran coach, Sean Magoun and the Air Riflery team are prepared for the 2018 season. Air Riflery is a marksmanship program where student-athletes post 10 meters from a target and shoot pellets at bullseyes that are the size of a silver dollar. They shoot from three different positions: prone, standing, and kneeling. Island School has many experienced sharpshooters returning for the 2018 season. We have sent multiple individuals to state competitions and look forward to doing so once again this season.
