David W. Pratt Hall

    • The Pratt 'Ohana

We are pleased to announce the naming of our new classroom building: David W. Pratt Hall after Vice President of the Board, David Pratt. David joined the board in 1987, chaired the Development Committee beginning in 1988, and acted as Board President from 1997-2009. He worked to move Island School from Kealia to Līhuʻe by soliciting funds and getting the master plan approved by the County of Kauaʻi. David almost single-handedly raised funds for the Wilcox Gym and the Frear Center, and has helped us secure more than 4 million of the 5.8 million needed to build this new building.

Island School is excited to announce the construction of the David W. Pratt Hall. The two story building, with six classrooms and a maker space, will be open and ready for students by August of 2023. This building will allow Island School to add engineering classes, expand the technology curriculum, add to a set of certified advanced placement classes for high school students, and offer several “deeper learning” opportunities where students can explore, solve, discover, and innovate.

Project costs are estimated at $5.7 million. Funding is provided through grants and donations from foundations, companies and individuals. This fundraising project presents a wonderful opportunity to support Island School in a meaningful and lasting way.

Phase 1: Grading Project

With the help of Cushnie Construction Company, Inc., phase 1 of the project should be completed by the end of 2020. Work continues on the foundation for the New Classroom Building, the road and emergency service lines to the area, as well as finishing the outer fields of the campus.

A special mahalo to Thatcher Magoun '23 for filming and Bradley Pratt for filming and editing.

Phase 2: Building Construction

On Friday January 21st, after Island School's 45th Birthday celebration, the Board of Directors and Founding Mothers came together to launch Phase 2 of the New Building Project. This ceremony began with speeches from President of the Board, Kathy Richardson, as well as Executive Vice President of Layton Construction Company, Will Summerhays. Layton Construction Company will begin construction on the new building in April of this year, with a scheduled completion date in April of 2023. The building, featuring six classrooms and a maker space, will be ready for students to return to school in August of 2023. This will be greatly beneficial in expanding our student body and presence on Kauaʻi.
