Aloha Island School 'Ohana,
We made it to Spring Break! It took about five days, but I think I am finally caught up after the amazing effort of the Gala! We can’t wait to share the details of our success as a community, but as we finalizing the details, I'll just say, "What an incredible night!" We are so grateful to all who helped support its success. Mahalo nui loa.
I am also so glad that the Kona winds didn’t deter our 5th Grade in their annual trip to Oʻahu this past week. As a culminating experience of their studies across the school year; they toured the Capitol and met with Senate President Ron Kouchi and Kauaʻi legislators, they worked with Mauliola Keʻehi and learn the history and moʻolelo of the place, engaging in practices of healing and self-regulation, and paddling to the tidal islands in a waʻa (canoe); they explored murals of Honolulu, bringing their mural work from campus to a whole new scale, and so much more! We are proud that trips like the tradition of the 5th Grade to Oʻahu expresses what it means to extend our students in learning from the classroom out into the world.
And as we turn towards next week, I know there are many families who are diving right into this break, using this shift from our regular schedules to have family time near and far. If you are traveling, we wish you a safe voyage and a smooth return home. Whether you’re doing a “staycation” as my family is or heading off into the horizon, may your days have both quiet time to enjoy an exciting novel or tending a garden as well as adventure that takes you outside up a mountain or out onto the ocean. May you enjoy time with family and friends and the time to dive deeply into hours of practice in an activity you love.
I hope you'll join me during this pause to be grateful for what we have in our lives, take stock in where we want to improve, and for our students, families and teachers alike, take the breath we need to head into an action-packed fourth quarter to close out our year.
As always, we are so grateful to you for entrusting Island School with the education of your children.
Together,
Nancy Nagramada P’29
