Honoring individuality in 5th grade

For the first quarter of the school year, the 5th grade class has been focusing on honoring their individuality and recognizing how students are more alike than different. 5th grade also completed a lengthy unit about how to write descriptively, while using figurative language. Students began the school year creating digital presentations about themselves outlining bits of their family, sports and hobbies they are interested in, sharing about their cultural backgrounds, and some of their favorite things. Students also wrote Bio Poems to share about themselves. At the end of the quarter, students completed two separate writing pieces, digging deeper into their unique individuality to write about themselves and honor where they are from. In the “Best Part of Me”, students chose a body part that was special and unique to them. Used figurative and descriptive language to write about why that body part was particularly important to them. In the writing piece “That’s Where I’m From…”, students focused more about the places, experiences, phrases, and traditions that define where they are from. They needed to write descriptively, using at least five different examples of various figurative language.
