This week, students in Derrick Little's Upper School art classes used oil pastels to create expressionist landscapes, and cardboard and tempera paint to create 3D landscapes.
In preparation for the expressionist landscapes project, Upper School students studied two innovative landscape artists, Charles Burchfield and Vincent Van Gogh. Students also learned about the Expressionist movement and viewed the art of various expressionist artists including Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc.
For their 3D landscape project, students transformed 2D images into 3D low bas-reliefs. Using only recycled cardboard and tempera paint in primary colors, they simplified complex landscapes into bold shapes that defined the foreground, middleground, and background. Much like building a stage set, students reimagined their chosen landscape & used colors, patterns and much imagination to create original low-bas relief sculptures.
