What an amazing day we had in Hāʻena. Keiki were blessed with the opportunity to visit this `āina and learn many things about "fish and poi" (According to Uncle Billy). There were four rotations each learning valuable insight to the perpetuation of our culture.
We were hydrologists helping make a pathway for the ʻoʻopu to go from the ocean, upstream. Keiki were also able to make their own pathways to see how they could reroute the water.
The loʻi needed help cleaning the apple snails out from the kalo. Keiki smashed the eggs and stomped on the snail shells.
We learned some moʻolelo about the auahi ceremony (fireworks) up on the peak of makana along with a moʻolelo of pohaku o kane.
Last rotation we cleaned the skin and rough parts out of the kalo to bag up and bring back to school. We made kalo poke, a sweet version and a salty version. Kalo went home for ʻOhana to make their own kalo poke.
