First Invitational Debate

Island School hosted Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) on campus on Wednesday afternoon, January 14. Six debaters from each school competed for two rounds of SPAR (Spontaneous Argumentation).  Led by Dr. Tom Worthen, HTA Debate Club Adviser, Jill Eriksson, and Paula Abbott, IS Debate Advisers, the students debated topics including The Hunger Games is harder to survive than Squid Games, Robots should have rights, AI should replace teachers, Everyone should learn to play a musical instrument, and more.

Island Schools winners were Zander '28, undefeated for his two rounds in debate, and Cora '29 for having the highest total public speaking skills score.  Other IS team members who participated were Tanner '29, Milo '29, Aylwen '29, and Macy '29.

This is the third year of debates at Island School, but our first tournament. The club was founded to hone development of and provide opportunities for civil discourse and practice of logical argumentation strategies and public speaking skills.  The club meets informally on Wednesday during lunch in PH1.  Bring your lunch and join us!

Also, special thanks to Mr. David Reynolds, who stepped in on short notice to judge, and all parents who supported the event!
