This week, Mr. Matt Mochary, visited Ms. Jill Eriksson's class to discuss his documentary “Favela Rising” (2006), which they watched together in class. The documentary depicts the rise of the AfroReggae movement in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The movement was led by a former drug trafficker, who decided to turn his life around and become a social activist with the aim of empowering young Favela residents to leave (or not join) violent drug gangs, as well as fight police corruption with their music videos.
