Congratulations to the new KIF Champions - ISV Girls Varsity Volleyball. In a first for our school, our girls team won the KIF title by defeating defending champion, Waimea Menehune. A capacity crowd witnessed one of the most exciting girls volleyball games to ever be played, when the Menehune rolled into the Wilcox Gym on Tuesday night with hopes of repeating as Champions. The Lady Voyagers had other plans.
Steady play, timely passing, blocking and hitting by starters Kianalei Kamalani, Liko Edwards, the Valentino twins - Brooklyn and Brittney, Mary Magoun, Lily DeSouza and Brookyn Mackey the Voyagers ran out to an early 2 set lead. The menehune refused to lose and drew even with the Voyagers, taking the next 2 sets setting up the winner take all, 5th set.
The game was tight to the end. With the menehune up 13-12 and the pressure of the KIF title on her shoulders, Brooklyn Valentino stepped up and held serve for 3 consecutive service points. The Voyagers took the lead at 14-12. With ALOHA BALL to go, Valentino served up her final serve that took Waimea out of system, putting Island School in the driver's seat. Setting up their final play, senior setter and captain Kianalei Kamalani set up the perfect play with a back set to Mary Magoun and with one swing, the Championship was settled - game, set, match - CHAMPIONS!!! The Girls KIF Title is now at Island School. With that win, Island School now holds the Girls and Boys Championship in volleyball.
The KIF Champions will represent the KIF at the New City Nissan HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball State Tournament on Oahu, October 25-28. Congratulations to the 2022-23 KIF Varsity Girls Volleyball team.
