Symbolist Self Portraits

In this drawing module, students explored the  artwork of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, best known for his expressive portraiture and ornate, symbolic style.

After learning the fundamentals of facial proportions, students created graphite self-portraits influenced by Klimt’s artistic approach. They were introduced to the concept of personal symbolism and used this to design intricate, decorative backgrounds—inspired by Klimt’s use of pattern, gold, and meaningful motifs.

Through this project, students honed their portrait-drawing skills and explored personal expression by including meaningful symbols into their art.
