Watanabe and Ing Win Spelling Bee

The ninth annual Island School Spelling Bee went for 37 rounds and over 90 minutes! There were 16 participants in grades 4-8. La‘iku Carvalho (grade 4) stayed the course through 14 rounds, and Kai Spindt (grade 7) through 19 rounds. This left Saebrie Pegeder (grade 5), Dylan Watanabe (grade 7) and Zach Ing (grade 7) in the final rounds. The list had to be extended with bonus word,s which had not been on their study list. Everyone including the audience of 4-8th graders, parents and teachers were on the edge of their seats as the threesome tackled their words.

Mahalo to Elizabeth Scamahorn, who coordinated the Bee, judges Adie Siebring, Bill Scamahorn and Joe Corbo, and to our pronouncer, Brent James. Thanks also to Bruce Hogue and 6th grader, Travis Calio for being the timers.

The winner, Dylan Watanabe, will represent Island School on January 12, at Chiefess Kamakahele School. Coming in second was Zach Ing, who will also represent Island School in January. Saebrie will act as alternate.
