Andrew Lampard, a CNN “Great Big Story” producer, contacted Kumu Kauka in December to do a story on Kapa on Kaua’i. Kumu included Caitlin Ka’aihui’s 4th grade students and the Island School Halau in the filming on Jan. 17 and 18. The boys in the class showed how they use ‘opihi shells to strip the bark and green fibers from the branches. The girls showed how they flatten out the fibers for further use. The CNN group also filmed the kapa collection at Grove Farm Museum. Joining Lampard was Jon O’Brien. Both are based out of New York. The segment should be available in early February.
