Water Filtration Lab in Earth Science

Our eighth grade class just completed their Water Filtration Lab in Earth Science. Eighth grade students are currently learning about surface water and groundwater. The water filtration lab allowed students to figure out a problem: how to filter water using natural resources (tree nuts, gravel, sand, leaves and peapod casings). Students gathered  most of the material from campus and worked on their hypotheses, where they determined the percentages of their filtration system, calculating the mass of each layer and then placing it to their water filtration system.  Porosity and permeability concepts played a very big role in this lab.
