Special field trip for Hawaiian language students

On February 1, 2024, a group of Hawaiian language and ʻukulele students were invited to attend Mālie Foundation's Eō e Liliʻu Song Competition at Convention Hall with Kumu Kanānāikahaku Kuhaulua. At the opening of the competition, Kealohilani Eu-Parziale, Pikomanawakūpono Vaughan and Kolohaiaheahe Kuhaulua represented Island School as they offered hoʻokupu and sang mele (songs) to honor our beloved Queen, Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha. Island School students then listened to the leo nahenahe (sweet voices) of the elementary, middle and high school haumāna (students) from Kawaikini NCPCS, Kanuikapono PCS & Ke Kula Niʻihau o Kekaha. Each school had student speakers who introduced their respective groupʻs performance, which consisted of two mele in honor of our queen.

It was a first time for many to hear the Hawaiian language in an immersive setting and a great way to kick off Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi! Mahalo nui to the Mālie Foundation for allowing our students the opportunity to be a part of such a special event! I mua Voyagers i ola ka ʻōlelo!!!
